Many locations boasting British myths are woven into famous stories, making them hugely popular short break destinations. Whether you’re a convert or a sceptic, these destinations all share a profound spiritual energy which has to be felt to be believed.

Undoubtedly one of the most famous mystical spots in the UK, Stonehenge is an incredible 50,000 years old. The iconic and ancient stone formation is based in South West England near to Bath, Bournemouth and Southampton. Archaeologists have been researching this place for years and have pieced together that it was either a place of ritual human sacrifice, astronomy or sun worship. Whatever Stonehenge was built for, nobody can deny it’s an astoundingly mythical spot.

Along with kilts, bagpipes and haggis, one of Scotland’s most iconic phenomenons is the Loch Ness Monster. Legend has it that the Loch Ness Monster, or ‘Nessie’ for short, is a mythical serpent that lives in the bottom of Loch Ness. Various photos and sightings over the years have kept people hooked on the myth and visitors still visit hoping to catch a glimpse of the giant amphibian. Don’t worry if you don’t manage to spot the Loch Ness Monster, the stunning highland scenery and the loch itself are more than worth the visit.

Robbing the rich to give the poor, we all know the famous story of Robin Hood. All of his tales were based in the magical Sherwood Forest, which is 450 acres of woodland in Nottinghamshire. Nobody knows for sure if the legend of Robin Hood is based on a real person or a fictional character, but the stories have inspired people to visit the forest for centuries. With various accommodation types within and surrounding the forest, the idyllic Sherwood Forest is a perfect short break location.

 

Wookey Hole – Wells, Somerset

Deep underground in the Wookey Hole Caves lives the infamous legend of the Wookey Hole Witch. The story goes that the villagers of Wookey persuaded the Abbot of Glastonbury to have her exorcised out by a local monk. The monk scooped up some water, blessed it, threw it over the witch and turned her into stone. Visitors travel from miles around to see the witch’s petrified body deep in these astonishing caves. Based on the Southern edge of the Mendip hills in Somerset, Wookey Hole is great excuse for a short break with Superbreak and a sure fire hit with kids!
