Venice is one of the most expensive destinations in Europe, but it is also ideal for couples and solo travelers.
If you are traveling on a budget and consider Venice to be forbidden, here is a list of free things to do there that will make you think again.
Take a free walking tour
There are many offices in Venice that offer free walking tours around the island. These tours usually last a couple of hours and are carried out by a local tour guide.
You can choose what part of the island you would like to see and book the tour online or show up at the place and time the tour starts  (even though there is a good chance you won’t be accepted ).
Each tour usually consists of a small group of people and takes you to the lesser known parts of the city. You learn interesting stories about famous museums, churches, and hidden buildings, you discover the history of the island it’s canals and bridges, and you meet with very interesting people from around the world.
These tours are free of charge, but feel free to tip your tour guide if you enjoyed it.
The Rialto bridge
In Venice, you will come across hundreds of bridges, but the Rialto bridge is the most famous one. Located only a few miles away from  St Mark’s square, the Rialto bridge and the area around it are one of Venice’s hot spots.
In order to arrive
The square right before the Rialto bridge, named Campo San Bartolomeo, is always packed with people who take a breather or enjoy a fast meal before they continue with their shopping or sightseeing.
The Rialto bridge is a few steps away and the view from there is breathtaking. The bridge itself is one of the most beautiful bridges in the world. From there St Mark’s Basilica is half a mile away.
St. Mark’s square and St. Mark’s Basilica
St Mark’s Basilica is the most renowned attraction in Venice. It is a stunning church located on the biggest and most beautiful square on the island.
The admission is free, though, if you’d like to skip the big waiting line, you can pay 3 euros. If you carry luggage with you, you can drop it for free at the deconsecrated church of San Basso where you will be given a token. You can then show the token to the official at the entrance and get priority access without any cost.
The square outside of the basilica is stunning as well, with an extraordinary view to the grand canal. It is filled with stools where you can sit and enjoy the view for as long as you like.
Basilica Madonna Della Salute
There are hundreds of churches in Venice and many of them are admission free. One that stands out is Basilica  Madonna Della Salute. It is one of the most dazzling churches in Venice with an interesting background story. It was built black in 1631 when there was an unprecedented outbreak of plague in the island.
The Venetians dedicated the church to the Lady of health  ( Madonna Della Salute). The church was designed by Baldassare Longhena (who was half Jewish ) and is a true masterpiece of architecture.
Giudecca, Lido, Murano, Burano
The main island of Venice is surrounded by four smaller ones: Giudecca, Lido, Murano, and Burano. Although the transportation to these islands is not free, their exploration can cost you nothing.
Giudecca is visible from the Dorsoduro district and there you can find hotels restaurant and cafes. Lido is the island that hosts the Venice film festival and is famous for its nightlife and its beach, where Venetians and tourists enjoy their summer swims. Murano is world renowned for its a glass and along with Burano and Torcello make an ideal destination for a day trip from Venice.
In Venice, you can also find very affordable guesthouses, cheap restaurants, and local cafes and a handful of supermarkets and convenient stores. You should definitely visit Venice If you are a solo traveler since it is considered one of the safest places to travel in the world. And if you believe that a trip to Venice is incomplete without a gondola ride but the cost terrifies you, then you can always choose a traghetto.
