5) Walk through the Australian Alps highest peaks
Although relatively small – covering about 11,000 square kilometres or 0.15% of the continent – these alpines ecosystems have outstanding natural value that provide billions of dollars’ worth of benefits to the nation each year.
Australian Alps has a lot of mountainous outdoor pursuits to offer. Climb to the top of Australia’s highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko, or hit the slopes during winter (June to August) at one of the many ski resorts dotted across its peaks. Ride a mountain bike along contour-hugging trails, bushwalk to a heritage hut or horse ride along alpine tracks.
Best time to go is from November to April, when days are warmer and longer considering the alpine climate is cold, wet, snowy and windy, with a short growing season.
The end-to-end multi-day walk takes about 50 to 60 days and is strictly for the intrepid traveller to cross three states, four national parks and some of Australia’s highest peaks on this tough long-distance walk. Pitch your tent in the wilderness, camp in the grounds, historic huts or alpine resorts close to the trail. Roam over the rugged mountains of Kosciuszko National Park in New South Wales and bushwalk or go mountain biking the rocky wilderness of Namadgi National Park near Canberra. Ski or snowboard on Australia’s highest slopes.
